The U.K.'s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) announced March 22 it has signed a memorandum of understanding on rice genomics with Vietnam's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to develop flood, drought, salt and pest tolerance into rice varieties. A total fund of 350,000 pounds ($601,000) will be used in a project to sequence the genomes of 30 high quality rice varieties. The new rice sequences will be used to breed rice varieties with improved traits designed to cope with climate change and population growth. The genomics platform will be developed at the BBSRC institutes, the John Innes Center and the Genome Analysis Center, to enhance rice breeding in Vietnamese institutions.
