EU sets phase-out for propisochlor

The European Commission has instructed EU member states to withdraw approvals for the herbicide propisochlor by Oct. 27. They may allow existing stocks to be sold and used until Oct. 27, 2012. It follows a decision not to re-register the active ingredient (ai). Arysta LifeScience had re-applied for approval after an initial evaluation identified data gaps. However, the commission notes there are still insufficient data to complete consumer risk and groundwater exposure assessments for the ai and its metabolites. The commission has also confirmed a second decision against re-registration of the herbicide dichlobenil. The ai had already been phased out in the EU by 2010 following a similar decision in 2008. Chemtura reapplied, but the evaluation raised concerns over potential groundwater contamination, potential long-range transport of a metabolite, and risks to birds, the commission says.
