French National Assembly approves measure to ban three classes of chemicals
The French National Assembly on May 4 adopted a proposal to ban the manufacture, import, sale or distribution of products containing phthalates, parabens and alkylphenols, based on the chemicals' endocrine disrupting properties. The proposal now goes to the French Senate for consideration. The French Environment Health Network welcomes the move. "With this legislative proposal, parliamentarians open the modern era of public health policy embodied by the issue of endocrine disruptors," network head André Cicolella says in a statement. However, the Paris-based Union of Chemical Industries says the move is an excessive application of the precautionary principle, and such a ban does not improve consumer safety.
