Indian court issues temporary ban on endosulfan

The Indian Supreme Court has temporarily banned the production, sale and use within the country of the organochlorine insecticide/acaricide endosulfan. Responding to a petition by the Democratic Youth Federation of India, the court observed that a detailed national study needs to be undertaken by an expert committee, so that the active ingredient's alleged ill-effects on human health and the environment could be better addressed. It appointed a joint committee headed by the director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research and the agriculture commissioner to conduct a scientific study on the issue. The committee is to submit its report within eight weeks and suggest any alternatives to endosulfan. In the meantime, an ad interim order was passed on the ban.
