European Commission taking Czech Republic to court

The European Commission announced May 19 it is referring the Czech Republic to the EU Court of Justice for failing to add acrolein -- approved at the EU level -- to its national list of approved biocide active ingredients. EU member states are to add substances included in Annex I of the Biocides Directive to their national lists of approved substances so producers can request authorization to place them on the market. Acrolein was to be added by Aug. 31, 2010. However, the Czech Republic has not made the addition, despite warnings from the commission.
