Advocacy groups petition Australian government to revamp pesticide laws

WWF Australia, consumer group Choice, the Public Health Association and the National Toxics Network have petitioned the Australian federal government to overhaul the country's pesticide laws, claiming 80 pesticides registered for use in Australia are banned in Europe, The World Today reported on June 15. Choice's Christopher Zinn told the news radio program that if a pesticide raises a concern, it can take years for regulators to conduct a review and act. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority maintains the country has one of the most stringent pesticide regulatory environments worldwide, according to the program.
