China aims for cleaner pesticides
China aims to promote the development of "environmentally friendly" and "economical" new pesticide products in its latest five-year plan (2011-2015), reports the Chinese newspaper, the AgriGoods Herald. Guidelines for the development of the pesticide industry were outlined in the "Petroleum and chemical industry 12th five-year plan development guide," compiled by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and released last month. The guide suggests that "high-toxicity" pesticides should be gradually eliminated and that by 2015, "high-efficacy, safe, economic and environmentally friendly pesticide products" should account for more than 50% of the country's pesticide production. New policies governing the Chinese pesticide industry, released last year, state that by 2015, the number of pesticide companies in China should be reduced by 30%.
