Pesticide Regulatory Program Priorities - What State Lead Agencies Think Is Important and How That Compares to EPA Priorities

The Association of American Pesticide Control Officials' State-FIFRA Issues Research and Evaluation Group recently surveyed pesticide and structural regulatory state lead agencies (SLAs) to determine what violations were most common and what their priorities were. The results were compared to priorities and programs established by EPA for their regional offices and for SLAs receiving grant funds. In general, the top violations and priorities identified by the SLAs were those of compliance with pesticide labels, certification and training requirements, and record-keeping. Additional activities and focus areas identified by EPA, such as fumigants and Clean Water Act permits, were not generally identified as priorities by SLAs. It is important for state and federal regulators to understand what is important to each and to share information on this topic for effective national pesticide regulation.
