Brazil Anvisa defends methamidophos phase-out
The Brazilian national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, has defended its actions in ordering the national phase-out of the organophosphate insecticide methamidophos. The phase-out was ordered last year, and would end all use of the active ingredient by the middle of next year. However, the agency is entangled in a dispute over the order with the national agrochemical company Fersol (Mairinque). The company has won several injunctions this year, including one last month, allowing it to continue to produce the insecticide.
