USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service announced in Wednesday's Federal Register that it has reopened the comment period for Monsanto's petition for commercialization of a corn variety genetically engineered for drought tolerance. The original comment period ended July 11, but it will now extend until Aug. 12. Jointly developed by Monsanto and German-based BASF, the new corn variety, MON 87460, is expected to reduce yield losses under water-limited conditions, as compared to conventional corn.
