EU loses billions from lack of GM crops, Swedish study estimates

If the EU fully adopted the cultivation of genetically modified sugar beet, canola and potatoes, it would generate an economic gain of 20 billion Swedish kronor (SEK) ($3.15 billion) per year, estimates a Swedish study. The analysis, commissioned by the Swedish Ministry of Finance, also calculates that the yield benefits of some GM crops would allow 645,000 hectares (ha) of arable land in the EU to become available for other uses.
