Biotech Bits

Salah Farag, agriculture minister in the new Egyptian government, has emphasized the role of agriculture, including biotechnology, in helping the Egyptian economy cope with demands of the recent political changes, according to Crop Biotech Update. He told researchers at Egypt's Agricultural Research Center last month that "the most important problem that faces Egypt today is the shortage of water, and one way to overcome this problem is through the use of biotech plants." A newly reconstituted biosafety committee is looking for a better system of enhancing biotech crop research with the intention of reaching commercialization.
