California: EPA on Aug. 25 reached an agreement with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation to resolve a civil rights complaint that claimed DPR's annual renewal of methyl bromide's registration in 1999 discriminated against Latino school children. The EPA Office of Civil Rights analyzed pesticide use in the state from 1995-2001 and raised concerns that there was an unintentional adverse and disparate impact on Latino school children from methyl bromide, based on the high percentage of Latino children in schools near fields where the pesticide was applied. DPR has agreed to expand monitoring of methyl bromide air concentrations.
