USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service announced in the Oct. 12 Federal Register that it has deregulated Monsanto's transgenic insect-resistant MON87701 soybean variety. The soybeans produce a Bt Cry1Ac toxin for the control of lepidopteran pests, such as bean shoot borers ( Epinotia aporema). The soybeans were developed for use in sub-tropical and tropical soybean-growing areas, such as South America, and are not intended for commercial production in the United States. A combination of MON87701 with Monsanto's glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready2Yield (MON89788) trait has been approved in Brazil and is due to be commercialized as Intacta in the fall of 2012.
