EU claims GMO rules "on track" amid criticism

The European Commission claims that its efforts to improve the implementation of legislation on genetically modified crops are "on the right track," despite the conclusion by independent consultants that the EU regulatory system is "dysfunctional." The commission's claim follows a review of EU legislation between 2009 and early 2011. The review consisted of evaluations by two consultancies during 2009 and 2010, followed by a commission analysis of the impact on policy of their findings. Forthcoming regulations on assessment, together with a study on GMO-free labeling systems, will help to resolve some of the criticisms, the commission says.
