Lignin density control switch identified

Researchers from the US Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation (Ardmore, Oklahoma) have identified the master control switch that governs the density of lignin in plants. The discovery could increase the value of non-food crops for biomass and biofuel use. The scientists found that one gene, NST1/SND1, directly regulates the accumulation of syringyl lignin in secondary cell walls.
