Danforth Center develops first smut-resistant maize

Researchers at the US Donald Danforth Plant Science Center (St Louis, Missouri) have developed the first maize variety resistant to corn smut fungus ( Ustilago maydis). Crop losses, particularly of sweet corn varieties, in the US due to infection by U maydis are worth $1,000 million per year. There are no known maize varieties that are naturally immune to the fungus.
