Key metabolite for systemic immunity identified

A team of researchers from a consortium of US universities has identified a highly conserved key metabolite that underpins the phenomenon of systemic immunity, also known as systemic acquired resistance (SAR), in plants. SAR is induced upon primary infection and protects distal tissues from secondary infections. The metabolite, glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P), was identified as a key regulator that is required to initiate transportation of immune response proteins to plant tissues.
