OSU to profile global barley lines

Researchers from the US Oregon State University (OSU - Corvallis) have been awarded almost $850,000 by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to fund a project to compile DNA profiles of more than 21,000 barley lines. The five-year project will be led by Professor Pat Hayes, head of the barley breeding programme in the OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences. The project will use association mapping to identify genes responsible for specific traits, such as drought tolerance, and use that knowledge to test varieties.
