Swedish university seeks altered content GM potato trials

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Alnarp) has applied to the European Commission for permission to conduct field trials of two potato lines that have been genetically modified to have an altered content. The first trial involves potatoes that have an increased amylose starch content. They exploit RNA interference of two starch branching enzymes, SBE1 and SBE2, to inhibit production of amylopectin starch. The trials are intended to assess the stability and yields of the amylose-only trait under field conditions.
