European WCR populations merging

Researchers studying invasion patterns of western corn rootworms ( Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) in Europe have confirmed that separate populations have mixed and that the hybrid population may have been strengthened as a result. Genetic analysis of population samples has confirmed that the two significant outbreaks of rootworms, in north-western Italy and south-eastern Europe, originated from independent introductions from North America, and that these populations first made contact in 2008 in the Veneto region of Italy.
