EU cereal area down but oilseeds up
The total cereal area in the 27 EU member states is estimated at 56.2 million ha for the 2010/11 season, down by 3.2% on the previous year, says the European farmers’ co-operatives group, Copa-Cogeca. A rise in wheat plantings is expected to be offset by a fall in other cereal crops. The oilseed area is put at 10.9 million ha, up by 3.1% due to expansion of the major oilseed rape crop. Protein crops are estimated at 1.3 million ha (for 25 member states), 22.4% ahead of 2009/10.
