French cereal area flat, oilseeds up

The area planted with cereals in France is slightly down by 0.7% this year to 9.2 million ha, according to estimates by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries’ statistics agency, Agreste. The decline is on account of a 17.4% dip in durum wheat sowings, 1.7% in barley and 1.4% in maize. The area for soft wheat, however is up by 1.8%. This is the third year of successive declines after the high of 9.7 million ha in 2008 ( Agrow No 579, p 14).
