Australia raises rice forecast

The area planted with rice in Australia is expected to rise by nearly 35% to 101,000 ha in 2011/12, according to the latest forecast by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics and Services (ABARES). The increase is attributed to greater supplies of irrigation water. The ABARES’ estimate for rice planting in 2011/12 is unchanged from its September forecast, but it has lowered its previous estimate of the 2010/11 area ( Agrow No 624, p 16).
