US GM maize up 5% in line with crop expansion
The area planted with genetically modified maize lines in the US this year has increased by 4.9% to 84.8 million acres (34.3 million ha), according to the USDA’s June survey. The proportion of maize planted with GM lines remained unchanged from 2011 at 88%, so the increase reflects the 4.9% rise in the overall maize area. The June estimate puts total plantings at 96.4 million acres, representing an uptick on the 95.9 million acres forecast in March ( Agrow No 639, p 14). Over 99% of the maize crop had been planted by the time of the June survey.
