Italy and Hungary OK Syngenta’s Affirm
Italy and Hungary have granted approval for Syngenta’s insecticide, Affirm (emamectin benzoate). They are the first registrations for an insecticide based on the active ingredient in the EU. Affirm is a water-soluble granule formulation for the control of codling moths ( Cydia pomonella) on apples and pears. The EU recognised the complete dossier for the ai in 2007 ( Agrow No 530, p 13). The Netherlands acted as rapporteur member state. Syngenta is to launch the product in Italy and Hungary this year, it told Agrow. Emamectin benzoate gained its first registration in Japan in 1997 for the Syngenta forerunner, Novartis, and was launched as Affirm the following year. It has been approved in the US, Australia, Mexico and some Asian countries, where it is marketed as Proclaim, Denim or Affirm.
