Kumiai/Bayer’s bispyribac gains EU Annex I listing

Kumiai Chemical’s herbicide, bispyribac-sodium, has gained full EU approval for use on rice and will be added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) on August 1st 2011. Bayer CropScience submitted the active ingredient’s application in 2002 and received its first EU provisional approval in Italy in 2004, as Nominee ( Agrow No 441, p 21). It also holds approvals in Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Romania, with an application under evaluation in Spain. EU member states have until January 31st 2013 to upgrade these to full approvals and ensure that appropriate risk mitigation measures are imposed to protect ground water. Furthermore, Bayer must submit additional data by July 31st 2013 on the possible ground water contamination by three metabolites.
