Argentina approves Syngenta’s Viptera maize
Argentina has granted Syngenta commercial approval for its genetically modified insect-resistant Agrisure Viptera (MIR162) maize. It will be launched in Argentina for the 2011/12 season. Viptera maize produces the Bt Vip3Aa20 toxin for the control of corn earworms ( Helicoverpa zea), fall armyworms ( Spodoptera frugiperda), sugar cane borers ( Diatraea saccharalis) and other pests. The toxin is also effective against south-western corn borers ( Diatraea grandiosella), but has no activity against European corn borers ( Ostrinia nubilalis).
