US approval for Valent’s BioNik

Sumitomo Chemical’s US biopesticide and plant growth regulator (PGR) business, Valent BioSciences (Libertyville, Illinois), has received US approval for its PGR, BioNik (S-abscisic acid 25%), for use on maize seed. It is aimed at hybrid maize producers for delaying germination and synchronising flowering of male and female plants. It will be available for use in large-scale trials in 2012, with a full launch planned for 2013, the company says. BioNik is also being developed for use in Europe, Argentina and Chile and on other hybrid crops such as sunflowers, canola and sorghum. BioNik is the first product under Valent’s Massivo seed treatment range. It is the second S-abscisic acid-based product, following the launch of ProTone on grapevines in 2010 ( Agrow No 591, p 25).
