US EPA to OK BioWorks’ biofungicides
The US EPA has proposed the registration of US biopesticide company BioWorks’ (Victor, New York) biofungicides, BW240 WP and BW240 G (both Trichoderma virens strain G41 0.61% + T harzianum Rifai strain T-22 1.15%). T virens strain G41 is a new active ingredient, whereas T harzianum Rifai strain T-22 has been approved since 1990. BW240 WP and BW240 G are for the control of soil-borne diseases such as Pythium spp, Phytophthora spp, Rhizoctonia spp and Fusarium spp in fruit, vegetable and field crops, turf and ornamentals. BioWorks applied for approvals in 2009, which were notified by the EPA in March 2010 ( Agrow No 588, p 24). The company sought a joint review by the US and Canadian authorities. The US approval decision is open to public comment until January 7th 2012.
