EFSA clears Monsanto’s Intacta soybeans
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance to Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant MON87701xMON89788 soybeans for import, processing and use in food and feed. MON87701 produces a Bt Cry1Ac toxin for the control of lepidopteran pests and was developed for cultivation in South America. MON89788 is tolerant to glyphosate. The combination is approved in Brazil and is due to be commercialised as Intacta in autumn 2012 ( Agrow No 624, p 2). Both individual traits already hold EU approval for food and feed use ( Agrow passim). The EFSA’s opinion will go forward for consideration by the European Commission.
