EFSA assesses cultivation of Monsanto’s GM soybeans

Cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready (40-3-2) soybeans in the EU is unlikely to have adverse environmental effects, provided the use of the related herbicide, glyphosate, is subject to appropriate risk management measures. This is the conclusion of the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) assessment of Monsanto’s application, which was originally submitted in 2005. The EFSA also recommends additional monitoring of the development of resistant weeds, and further experiments on possible effects on bees. Its opinion will go forward for consideration by the European Commission.
