Valent’s US grasshopper seed treatment

Sumitomo Chemical’s US subsidiary, Valent USA Corporation (Walnut Creek, California), is recommending the use of its insecticidal seed treatment, Nipsit Inside (clothianidin), to suppress grasshoppers on cereals in the US. The FIFRA section 2(ee) recommendation, which allows use against a pest not on the label, covers 13 states. There has been a significant increase in grasshopper numbers in key cereal-growing states due to the drought across much of the central US, Valent points out. Earlier this year, the company received US approval for a fungicidal/insecticidal seed treatment, Nipsit Suite Cereals OF, which combines Nipsit Inside with the fungicides, Metlock (metoconazole) and metalaxyl for on-farm use ( Agrow No 634, p 20).
