EU food/feed approval for Syngenta’s Viptera maize

Syngenta’s genetically modified insect-resistant MIR162 ( Bt Vip3Aa20) maize trait, named Viptera, has been granted EU approval for import and use in food and feed. The European Commission went ahead with the authorisation after EU member states were unable to reach a majority decision on the GM line ( Agrow No 650, p 9). Syngenta originally applied for EU approval in July 2010. MIR162 is only sold in combination with other traits in Syngenta’s Agrisure maize range. It was launched for cultivation in the US in 2010 and in Latin America the following year.
