US to draw up endangered species plan

Four US government agencies involved in the assessment of pesticide risks to endangered species expect to develop an implementation plan within the next three months in response to recommendations from a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) panel. On April 30th, the NAS committee called for the EPA, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to use a common scientific approach in determining the potential effects of pesticides on endangered and threatened species (Agrow No 663, p 18). The NAS panel was convened at the request of the EPA, the NFMS, the FWS and the USDA to address scientific differences in the agencies’ approaches. The agencies say that they are working “collaboratively and expeditiously” to review the NAS report and identify improvements in current scientific procedures
