Call for “last resort” approach to EU bans on GM crop cultivation

Plans to allow EU member states to ban the cultivation of EU-approved genetically modified crops should be amended to stress that such action would be a “last resort”, suggest some members of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee. Member states should be required to first make full use of co-existence measures for GM and conventional crops, before invoking their right to restrict or ban a GM crop, says MEP George Lyon. He further proposes that any action to restrict or ban cultivation only be allowed on a case-by-case, crop-specific basis, rather than allowing blanket bans on all GM crop cultivation.
