African groups launch ag input info system
Two trading blocs covering eastern and southern Africa, the COMESA and the EAC, along with NGO IFDC have launched agricultural input market information system AMITSA. It aims to improve access to inputs such as pesticides for “public and private stakeholders” in the region, the partners say. The lack of accurate, up-to-date information on such inputs is one of the major constraints to agricultural productivity and the development of trade in the region, they add. AMITSA will provide accessible data through an open and collaborative system, covering Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The use of such products “remains extremely low” in the region. Market news, including monthly price reports, are compiled and shared via an interactive, web-based portal: www.amitsa.org.
