Philippine court halts GM aubergine trials

The Philippine Court of Appeal has ordered a halt to field trials of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt aubergines (eggplants). On a petition filed by environmentalist group Greenpeace, the Court cited the precautionary principle to justify its action, pointing to the lack of scientific evidence showing Bt aubergines as safe for human consumption. It disregarded the argument that the trials were being conducted in order to generate efficacy data and safety assessments. Field trials on the GM lines were approved in May 2011 at two locations after trials being carried out by the University of the Philippines (Los Baños) in the city of Bay were destroyed by vandals earlier during the year (Agrow No 611, p 27).
