January 2013 Patent Watch
In January, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) or the European Patent Office (EPO) published 32 patent applications, from eight companies and one university, that concerned new agrochemicals. The most active company was BASF, with nine applications, followed by Bayer CropScience (seven), Dow AgroSciences (five), DuPont (four), Syngenta and Nippon Soda (two each) and Sumitomo Chemical and Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha (one each). There was also an application from the North Carolina State University (US). The most popular field was insecticides, with 15 of the 32 applications, followed by herbicides (ten) then fungicides (five). There were two patent applications that covered both insecticides and fungicides.
BASF was particularly active in herbicides, its five patents on pyrazines and pyridines all covering not dissimilar compounds.
