EU presses ahead with biocide fees
The European Commission is to press ahead with its proposals on biocide registration fees, after EU member states were unable to reach a majority vote in favour of or against the plans. Fees were a contentious issue in the development of the new EU biocidal products Regulation (528/2012), with the Commission objecting to member states wanting a say in how fees were set (Agrow No 651, p 7). However, they returned a “no opinion” vote on its proposed fees in the EU Standing Committee on Biocidal Products in March, and again in an appeal committee in May. Therefore, the Commission intends to take its own decision, in view of the urgency of having fees in place before Regulation 528/2012 is implemented on September 1st. The Regulation covers non-crop pesticides.
