USGS shows national pesticide use

The US Geological Survey (USGS) has issued national maps and trend graphs for the first time on US pesticide usage between 1992 and 2009. The maps and supporting database of county-level use estimates for 459 pesticides have been developed for national and regional water quality assessments. “These nationally complete and consistent, county-level use estimates are vital for USGS water quality models that estimate pesticide concentrations in streams and rivers,” says one of the study’s authors, Wes Stone. “In addition, long-term annual data is essential for interpreting water quality trends.”
