USDA OKs DuPont Pioneer GM canola
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has proposed the deregulation of DuPont seed subsidiary DuPont Pioneer’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant 73496 canola. It expresses the GAT4621 (glyphosate acetyltransferase) protein. The deregulation petition for the canola line was among nine included in a new consultation process introduced last year (Agrow No 644, p 13). The APHIS received 4,686 comments on the petition. Issues raised included cross-pollination and the effects of herbicide use on weed resistance and non-target organisms. The APHIS has determined that the canola is unlikely to pose a plant pest risk. Its preliminary assessments are subject to a 30-day public comment period until June 28th.
