Ghana OKs Bollgard II cotton trials
Ghana has authorised trials of genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard II (MON15985) cotton. The National Biosafety Committee (NBC) has granted approval to the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute, the SARI, to carry out trials of Bt cotton lines at six sites in the north of the country. The Ghanaian Parliament enacted the Biosafety Bill last year (Agrow No 642, p 23). The NBC has also authorised trials of GM insect-resistant Bt cowpeas, and two other lines of GM sweet potatoes and of rice, according to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety’s Biosafety Clearing House.
