No fitness cost for MHR wild oats

Results from a study by researchers from the US Montana State University (Bozeman) have confirmed that the emergence of multi-herbicide(MHR) traits in wild oats (Avena fatua) has not affected the weed’s competitive ability. Ecological theory predicts that fitness costs of herbicide resistance tolerance should lead to the reduced relative abundance of resistant populations upon the cessation of herbicide use, the researchers point out. A fatua is an economically important weed of cereal and pulse crops in the US northern Great Plains region.
