More delays on EU GM crop approvals
EU member states have again failed to reach majority decisions for or against approvals of genetically modified crops. Applications put to a vote in June included food and feed use approval of the joint Monsanto/Dow AgroSciences SmartStax maize line, which combines Monsanto’s Genuity VT Double Pro (MON 89034) and YieldGard VT RW (MON88017) with Dow/DuPont’s Herculex I (1507) and Herculex RW (59122). The SmartStax application includes four related maize lines combining three traits, and a further four combining two traits. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) gave a positive safety assessment to SmartStax and all its sub-combinations in 2011 (Agrow No 627, p 12). However, the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health could not agree on the proposed approvals and the European Commission will forward them to an appeal committee, reports Reuters.
