Ukraine to start GM crop trials

Ukraine is to start a pilot project for field trials on genetically modified forage crops, reports the newswire, Allaboutfeed.net. The Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food, Mykola Prysyazhnyuk, has reportedly stated that after the completion of the necessary legislation, the country will commence the experimental sowing of GM crops in a closed environment in order to understand the effectiveness and impact of genetic engineering on feed crops. Ukraine established criteria for risk assessment of the environmental release of GMOs in 2011, which was viewed as a move towards the commencement of field trials on GM crops (Agrow No 613, p 12).
