Portuguese agchem sector inks agbiodiversity deal
The Portuguese agrochemical industry association, the Anipla, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Agriculture’s nature conservation institute, the ICNF, to promote biodiversity through the correct and safe use of pesticides. The deal foresees the integration of the conservation of biodiversity issues with sustainable services within agriculture, the association says. The Anipla is to employ its pesticide use management venture, Projecao Cultivar, which has been in operation since 2005 to promote safe use for workers and bystanders, and the adoption of measures to ensure water and soil protection. Several measures on safe pesticide management were debuted in 2005, while the government passed a law requiring the implementation of measures on risk and environmental impact reduction for pesticide applications (Agrow No 464, p 13). The memorandum will create special relevance for "agrobiodiversity" within the programme, the association says.
