EU steps up tests for Chinese GM rice
EU sampling and testing regimes for unauthorised genetically modified rice from China are to be extended with effect from July. The current testing of rice products will now also cover any food or feed product containing rice. Testing procedures were last strengthened in 2011, but, since then, there have been 56 notifications from EU member states about the discovery of unauthorised GMOs in rice imports from China, the European Commission notes. No GM rice events are approved in the EU. The new rules were agreed by member states in April (Agrow No 663, p 13).
