EU JRC develops test strategy for GM wheat
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed a testing strategy to help control any accidental import of Monsanto’s unauthorised genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant wheat line, MON71800. The strategy will confirm the absence of the GM line in grain deliveries, and is based on a combination of validated methods already in use. The JRC notes that Monsanto has provided a detection method for MON71800 to the authorities in the EU and other countries (Agrow No 666, p 15), but says that its necessary verification “will take time”. Until that is completed, the new strategy should be used. The USDA validated the Monsanto test in June and has concluded that the discovery of MON71800 in a US field in May was an isolated incident (see this issue).
