April 2010 Patent Watch

In April the US Patent and Trademark Office published a total of 45 patent applications, with 26 different assignees, covering genetically modified plants and methods of producing them. Ten were for input traits, especially methods of producing fungal disease resistant or nematode-resistant plants (four and two, respectively) or herbicide tolerance (two). Twenty-five were for output traits, especially increased yield or stress tolerance (seven); altered oil, starch, carbohydrate or other content (12), or other phenotypic changes (six); and ten patent applications were for other aspects of GM technology, including newly identified promoters and transformation methods.
